Mary Kilcline Cody is a PhD scholar at the School of Culture, History and Language, the Australian National University, Canberra. Her doctoral thesis is the first microhistory of a sensational murder trial  in colonial South East Asia, entitled The Trial of Mrs Proudlock: Law, Government and Society, British Malaya, 1911. Her research interests include law and colonial societies, patent medicine, history and fiction and the work of William Somerset Maugham.
