He is Professor and Chair at Western Michigan University. His research focuses on the transitional era spanning the end of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth century. His work analyzes the changes of this period from the perspectives of government, law, agriculture, environment and gender. He is interested in the process in which modern notions of individualism and private property transformed the farmers’ relationship to the land.
