David A. Bell is the Sidney and Ruth Lapidus Professor in the Era of North Atlantic Revolutions at Princeton University. He specializes in the history of early modern and revolutionary France, nationalism, and war. His most recent book is The First Total War (2007). He is currently writing a general history of Europe, and a joint biography of the French revolutionaries Charles-Philippe Ronsin and the duc de Biron.
